Can I Get ADSL Broadband?

Recently, some of our customers have been contacted by Internet companies offering them Broadband Internet access. Excitedly they went about arranging to have it connected, only to be disappointed. Despite the promises of the Internet companies, they found they were too far away from their local telephone exchange. Frustrated, they returned their installation kits.

Sadly, marketing by these companies has blurred the real facts about ADSL. Lets review some of these facts in this issue.

ADSL Broadband is a fast Internet access technology using your phone line. Many of you no doubt are familiar with the older dial-up Internet connections, and know the scene. You connect to the ‘Net, and then go and make a hot drink while you wait for a web page to load. Also, while you are online, your phone line is engaged, and no one can phone in, or phone out either.

One major benefit of ADSL Broadband internet is its speed. Current dial-up Internet connections download a web page in a couple of minutes or so, while ADSL Broadband will download it in 3 seconds. A large file of say 20MB, on dial-up, would take nearly 3 hours to download. On ADSL, the same file takes 20 minutes.

Along with speed, ADSL has the advantage of giving you two phone lines. It does this by ‘splitting’ your current line into 2 separate channels. This means you can use the Internet, and at the same time make or receive phone calls.

ADSL Broadband does however have one limitation. To access ADSL, your home or business must be within 4 klms of your local telephone exchange. Kingaroy, Nanango, Yarraman, and Blackbutt exchanges are all ADSL enabled. If you live within 4 klms of these exchanges, you can access ADSL Broadband.

However, many of our customers are rural residents, and live much further away than 4 klms from their local exchanges. Because of this they have been unable to access faster Internet connections, that is, until now.

A new ADSL Internet technology is now available to you via Satellite dish. This involves a satellite dish mounted on your home or business roof, and a receiver inside connected to your computer. This technology does not use your phone line at all, but streams the Internet to you from one of the many satellites circling our globe. Satellite ADSL Broadband is available anywhere in rural Australia, thus providing anyone outside the regular exchange network the opportunity to enjoy faster internet.

Thanks to the Government’s HIBIS scheme, Satellite ADSL plans are available at reasonable prices. BorderNet, a satellite Internet provider, offer plans starting from $49.50 per month. If you signup for an 18 month contract, your satellite dish and receiver are supplied & installed for free.
